The Nursing Assistant I provides basic health and personal care and participates in ongoing data collection for patients assigned her/him by a registered nurse. The Nursing Assistant I performs certain patient care activities under the direction of an RN who accepts accountability for the safety and effectiveness of said care. The Nursing Assistant I may also be assigned to indirect care of patient equipments, etc. or be assigned to work other nursing units in order to meet patient/staffing needs. The NA I competently perform interventions and care in accordance with standards of care specific to the age group of patients served. The age groups served by the above named NA I are Infants, children, adolescents, adults, geriatrics.
Essential Job Functions:
The following is a summary of the essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time. Assists with patient personal hygiene and grooming according to hospital procedures in a reasonable amount of time. Changes bed linens and removes soiled linen according to hospital procedure. Assists patients with ambulation, transfer, and repositioning using proper body mechanics and protecting patients from falls or injury. Assists patients with meals and fluid intake; measures totals and documents intake according to hospital procedure. Assists patients with elimination and measures, totals and documents output according to hospital procedures. Assists with maintaining a clean and safe environment for patients. Assist with special procedures as instructed by the registered nurse and according to hospital procedures. Communicates appropriately with patients, visitors and employees. Performs indirect patient care activities as assigned. Demonstrates preparation for appropriate response to emergencies. Continues to learn. Cooperates with rules expected of health care team members.
QualificationsEducation and formal training:
High school education preferred. Successful completion of Nursing Aide I course at an approved North Carolina institution. Listing as a Nurse Aide I by the Department of Facility Services. Special instruction and supervised clinical practice for Category II procedure.
One (1) year experience preferred.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities required:
Demonstrates sound basic clinical Nurse Aide I knowledge and interpersonal skills adequate to interact in a polite and respectful manner. Demonstrates an attitude of cooperativeness with fellow caregivers from all areas. Demonstrates the ability to interact with all levels of patients/families/visitors as well as employees. Demonstrates support of a patient-focused care philosophy and completes any special instruction and supervision needed for clinical practice in Category II or special procedures. Must be able to read and write legibly.
Meets employee health requirements of Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time, turn and position patients, perform CPR. Must have adequate hearing to hear patient call bells and communicate with physicians and other healthcare personnel by telephone (hearing impaired phone may be used). Must be able to see adequately (with glasses if necessary) to assess patients and document on the patient record. Moderate physical exertion is required including but not limited to moving, lifting and transferring patients. Must be able to lift and support a minimum of 50 lbs. Must be able to lift and support a minimum of 150lbs with assistance. Under certain circumstances lifting devices and equipment as well as additional personnel may be required.
